Some of the core projects for the anniversary year 2019.

Compositions – metamorphoses

The idea: Students at some of the best music colleges in the world send us compositions which are short, beautiful, demanding and playable by a school orchestra. A jury headed by the president of the Hamburg College of Music and Theatre, Elmar Lampson, will select the best ones which will then be made freely available to the Waldorf school orchestras around the world throughout 2019. From the many wonderful submissions, the demanding piece for large orchestra, Procession-Contraction: Metamorphosis, by Haihui Zhang was selected. Haihui Zhang comes from Shanghai and is studying at the Manhattan School of Music.

The second work to be chosen was Village, an easier piece to play for string orchestra and woodwind by Xu Weizun (English name: Franco) from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Both works will be available for download from the waldorf-100.org website at the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

We are also happy to receive other compositions from around the Waldorf schools provided we are allowed to make them freely available on our website until the end of 2020.

Drama – “Where is the human being?”

The idea: We are calling for a play dealing with the existential question about the nature and actions of the human being in the twenty-first century with all its new challenges. The play must be capable of being performed by upper school pupils and should have a correspondingly large cast. The prize will be awarded in early 2019 by a prominent jury consisting of well-known actors, authors and dramaturgs who have themselves attended a Waldorf school.

Many pieces have already been received but the competition is still open. It is open to authors who have published at least one piece with a theatre publisher. All upper school pupils are in turn warmly invited to send us their essays, poems, plays or other textual contributions which deal in the widest sense with the question “Where is the human being?”. Perhaps we will publish all of them, but at least a large selection, on our website (waldorf-100.org) and possibly also turn them into a book.

Card exchange

The idea: Each Waldorf school in the world sends a postcard to every other Waldorf school in the world. To this end we have had 1.4 million postcards printed (with Blue Angel certified paper and ink and given us by the printer at cost price).

One thousand two hundred cards were sent to 1,200 schools to be decorated by pupils of all age groups and then posted. Each school can then make a wonderful portrait of the schools all over the world from the cards it receives. This allows all pupils to be involved in Waldorf100 from the beginning and at the same time develop an awareness of the whole world.

The feedback from all continents is overwhelming.

We received overjoyed reactions from many schools working in some parts of the world far distant from other Waldorf schools because they suddenly felt part of a giant community encompassing the world. Many schools also sent us photos of their pupils at work on the cards, others their wonderful ideas for the presentation. Since we have precise information from UPS about who received the parcels in which location, we have also been able to help a surprising number of – particularly German – schools to find their cards which “never arrived” ...

Films

The idea: The medium of film is today the main source of information for the great majority of people.

That is why we want to use this medium to make the global importance of an education which starts with the human being visible far beyond the Waldorf schools and thus to intervene in one of the most important debates of the present. The film Learn to Change the World was called up almost 400,000 times on YouTube alone and watched to the end a far above average number of time. If we count all Internet-based platforms together, it is likely to have been called up approaching 750,000 times. The film is meanwhile available in many different language versions and we are still receiving requests for more translation.

We are currently working on three other films. The first film is a deepening of the original film, will appear in autumn 2018, and forms part of the start of the anniversary school year. The second film is a joint production with IASWECE, the International Association for Steiner/Waldorf Early Childhood Education, and will be released in April 2019. The third film will be a larger project of which we anticipate that it will subsequently be broadcast by several TV stations which have expressed an interest in doing so. It deals with childhood in an increasingly digitalised world and will illustrate to a larger audience important constitutional developmental phases of the child and the resulting steps towards the acquisition of a really sound (media) competence.

Bees & Trees

With the Bees & Trees Waldorf100 project we want to encourage all Waldorf establishments worldwide to transform their grounds into a haven for bees. We hope that this will do something to counter the worldwide phenomenon of bee colony collapse, true to our slogan “Learn to change the world”. Children and young people can learn a lot from and with bees:

•   Recognising and understanding the natural link between forage crops, bees and wild bees.

•   Making honey and candles out of beeswax as well as producing natural cosmetics.

•   Building and repairing bee hives and wild bee nesting sites in craft lessons.

•   Exploring the social life and the particular form of reproduction in the bee colony.

•   Investigating complex decision-making processes within a bee colony and its swarm intelligence and relating it to human beings.

In order to support Waldorf establishments worldwide on this path, we have prepared a handout for schools and kindergartens together with some beekeepers and Mellifera as a pioneer in ecological beekeeping. So that the earth becomes a place again in which bees feel happy, for if the bees are doing well, then nature and human beings will also do well!

Relay through Germany

This Waldorf100 sports project unites the schools in Germany, for sport inspires and unites people – wholly in the spirit of the large anniversary celebrations. The pupils run numerous stages on various routes to collect as much sponsorship as possible to donate to Waldorf projects throughout the world. The routes of the relay run the length and breadth of Germany, from north to south, east to west – the starting shot was fired at the Flensburg Marathon on 10 June 2018. All the Waldorf schools along the five routes are called upon to participate in the run.

The anniversary year is also a WOW-Day that lasts the whole year. In collaboration with the Friends of Waldorf Education, the sports project also becomes a nationwide sponsorship run in which the participants collect small or large donations for each stage that is completed to benefit Waldorf projects around the world. Everyone can participate in the Waldorf100 relay, be they a pupil, parent or teacher. Since the stages vary in length, ways of locomotion other than one’s own feet are also permitted, thus for example bicycles, unicycles, inline skates, horses or boats.

The relay is being organised by the Waldorf100 team und Josefina Elsler, who as a professional track and field athlete herself has a lot of experience with relays. “It gives me huge pleasure, as a former sportswoman, to be able to organise this unique project.” It didn’t matter by what means the distances were covered, the only thing that could not be used was a motor, Elsler said.
