“A Mentor in Your Pocket” — the First-Ever Waldorf App for the iPhone

By Eugene Schwartz, March 2015

The appearance in the Apple App Store of iWaldorf, the first “Inspired-Waldorf” app for the iPhone and iPad, is the culmination of a three-and-a-half year struggle to cross yet another ahrimanic barrier and bring Waldorf education to the wider public.

On a screen just a few square inches square you will find a library’s worth of essays, videos, podcasts, and student art that will tell you everything you want to know about the Waldorf grade school. This app provides access to the largest archive of Waldorf student artwork in the world. In addition, many hours of podcasts and videos illuminate the unique qualities of the Waldorf classroom.

And for those who want to go further, there are links to online conferences and downloads of courses for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers.

In its debut edition, the iWaldorf app offers:

  • 8 extensive descriptions of the Waldorf Curriculum, Grades 1-8, including block rotations and week-by-week lesson plans.
  • 10 Essays exploring aspects of Waldorf education including Eugene Schwartz's authoritative "ADHD: A Challenge of Our Time."
  • 10 Galleries of Waldorf Student Work with over 200 images and extensive commentary. Eight Galleries cover the grades, and two galleries focus on Form Drawing and Geometric/Perspective Drawing.
  • 10 Videos about Waldorf education including the full-length film "Considering Waldorf."
  • 10 hour-long Podcasts of lectures about Waldorf education.
  • 5 Contributions to the role of Anthroposophy in Waldorf methodology.
  • 8 Compilations of grade-specific resources for Grades 1-8.
  • And new material will be added every month!

Whether you are an experienced teacher brushing up on a specific subject or a teacher trainee minutes away from teaching your first demonstration class; whether you are a parent wondering what a third-grader's drawings should look like or a Development Director prepping for an Elevator Talk you have to give to a potential donor…the iWaldorf app will be of help.

In spite of their initial objections to the Internet, every Waldorf school in the world has its own website. In spite of their initial horror about the content on YouTube, every Waldorf school in the world has created marketing videos. I am confident in predicting that, within five years, every Waldorf school in the world will have its own smartphone app. If your school wants help in creating such an app, I would be happy to help.
