Can physicians benefit from arts?
According to a new study, medical students with a more diverse background, which includes artistic and visual skills may potentially hold an edge over their peers who haven't had exposure to the arts.
"Art training could be helpful across many specialties – especially ones like ophthalmology, dermatology, and radiology, where diagnosis and treatment plans are based primarily on direct observation," says Gil Binenbaum of the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. He's the senior author of a new study, which is published in the journal Ophthalmology.
A group of first-year medical students in Philadelphia who regularly visited the art museum
significantly improved their observational skills.
