International Conference ‘Around 1600′

November 2014

Initiated by the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica to mark the fourth centenary of the Rosicrucian Manifestoes (1614-1616), 'Around 1600. Constellations between Schulmetaphysik, confessionalisation and Hermetic speculation' is an interdisciplinary and international conference taking place in Munich on 18-20 November to investigate the politicial, religious and social climate in Germany on the eve of the Thirty Years’ War.

The ’counterforce’ which challenged the religious, political and social establishment in the German lands can be associated with Florentine Hermetic Neoplatonism, late medieval apocalypticism and the Reformation. More than a conference devoted to Late Humanism, the encounter will not only bring to light the formal aspects of humanism – the exchange of letters, the Republic of Letters, the embrace of Antiquity – but also the theological, natural-philosophical, cultural and intellectual structures which mark the period ‘Around 1600′ as an era with its own special profile.

The conference has been organized by Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann (Freie Universität Berlin) and Friedrich Vollhardt (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich) with the generous support of the Freie Universität Berlin, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, the Carl-Friedrich-von-Siemens Stiftung, Munich, and the Stiftung Rosenkreuz.
